Support of the 'Go On' message:To fulfill INL's energy research mission, access to a skilled, educated workforce is critical. The lab needs technicians and operators to monitor and maintain the Advanced Test Reactor and scientists with advanced degrees to design next generation nuclear energy systems. INL supports programs for Idahoans of all ages to enter science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields including:

  • I-STEM founding member (statewide STEM education initiative)
  • STEM-related resources and training to Idaho’s K-12 teachers
  • Workforce development programs
  • Energy Systems Technology and Education Center (ESTEC), 2-year program to train technicians and operators to work in energy fields
  • Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES), where Idaho university students conduct real-world energy research

Skills needed in 5-15 years in our industry: People who can obtain security clearances in the scientific and engineering disciplines (physics, materials and computer science, and nuclear, chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering – among others).
